Furniture Assembly Challenge – A 12-Drawer Queen Sized Storage Bed!

It was a new apartment. The furniture movers just left. We were called in for a 9pm appointment. The client mentioned it was a big bed on the phone. However, when we opened the box that evening, we found over 100 pieces of all shapes and sizes. Most importantly, we now noticed that there were 12 drawers! We silently unpacked, settled down, and got ready for a very long evening. We had to finish this furniture assembly project so that our client could get a good night’s sleep. We accepted the challenge. The Challenge Began!

Perhaps not as difficult as a SpaceX mission to Mars, but assembling a 12-drawer bed was no easy task. Despite a few complications along the way, we managed to complete the job by 2am that night. Thankfully, although tired, our client was happy with the final result – A Fully Armed and Operational 12-drawer Queen Sized Storage Bed!

Then the 4-drawer cabinet, then the 3-door wardrobe, … until we finally finished with the TV stand. We followed all instruction booklets to the letter, and improvised when needed. In the end, everything was assembled correctly. There were zero scratches, missing pieces, warped attachments, or driven through screw holes. Additionally, we cleaned up after each assembly, ensuring no mess was ever left behind. The client was very happy with the results and thanked us for our professionalism and hard work.

Why Hire a Professional?

We specializes in assembling IKEA, Wayfair, and similar products. With over 10 years experience, there is no item we can’t assemble. When and if a surprise occurs, it’s because of our experience that we can carry a project through to a clean finish. For example, the challenge with this particular assembly job was the Wayfair TV Stand. WOW. Just Wow! The instructions were like a manual for a warp engine core written by Scotty himself from Star Trek. It took extra time to sort out what went which way and which connected to what-which and where. Nevertheless, with relentless patience and over 10 years experience, everything concluded into an object of perfect form – A Solid TV Stand.

Our Best Tips for Ikea and Wayfair Furniture Assembly

TIP #1: Always read the entire booklet before you start an assembly.
A common mistake people make is not reading the directions thoroughly before starting an assembly. It’s always a good idea to read ahead so that you can understand how what you do in step #1 can impact later steps in the line. Example, “oh, it must be placed in this fashion, because later, it will be attached to this piece here…”

TIP #2: Read ahead and Identify if you will need help.
By skipping forward a few pages in an instructional manual, you can generally see if you will need a hand or not. If later pages turn more into schematics for assembling a rocket ship, it’s best to contact a professional before any damage is done. Assembling a simple chair is one thing. To assemble a 12 drawer queen sized bed… things get complicated quickly. It’s better to hire a professional for an hour or two than to buy the same item twice.

TIP #3: Start with a drill and finish by hand.
IKEA furniture is fragile. If you would like to speed up your assembly, but don’t want to blow a screw right through both faces of your panels, then you will need a drill with torque control. See below for our recommended power drill.

DEWALT 20V MAX XR Brushless Impact Driver and Hammer Drill Icon

DEWALT 20V MAX XR Brushless Impact Driver and Hammer Drill (DCK287D2) – For speed, if you don’t already have a set of drills, skip buying a cheap drill and get a set that will last for a very long time. This particular set from Dewalt includes an impact driver and drill/hammer drill. With this kit, you can pretty much drill into anything – wood, concrete, tile, steel… everything! For something delicate like IKEA furniture, simply set your torque dial down to 5 or 6 and this will prevent the screw from tearing into a panel. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

Ratcheting Screwdriver Set icon

38-Piece Magnetic Ratcheting Screwdriver Set – For IKEA and similar furniture, it’s always a good idea to tighten everything down by hand. This little set has all the bits needed to complete a furniture assembly project. As a bonus, it has a ratcheting system, so you don’t have to reposition your grip after each twist. It also has a magnetic tip, and you can store bits inside the handle. Neat! Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

Plastic Spinning Wall Anchor Screws

A Set of Plastic Spinning Wall Anchor Screws – We always tell clients, “always use” the plastic set. Never the metal set. Why? Because plastic anchors absorb vibrations and never damage the surrounding wall. Whereas metal anchors, vibrations causes their hard surface to slowly, over time, wear out the wall like a saw cuts through wood. Eventually, they simply fall out altogether. As handymen in the field, we can’t count the amount of times we have seen metal anchors fail and fall off the wall. Never once have we seen a loose plastic anchor. TIP: Dip the anchor in water and then drill it into the wall for a cleaner entry. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

Tool Purchases to Avoid

For this project, there are tools that are needed, and then there are tools that should be avoided. The following are a few tools that you should absolutely never purchase!

Metal Spinning Wall Anchor Screws Icon

Self-Drilling Metal Drywall Anchors – When it came time to anchor the cabinet to the wall, we stayed away from these metal anchors. Metal Drywall Anchors are especially bad for other projects like curtain installations. Over time, vibrations cause the anchors to chew up the hole and fall out. It’s best to always stick with plastic anchors for drywall.

Outdoor Gallery Panels

Here, we create gallery panels for an outdoor exhibit at Second Cup du Parc. First, we build each panel with a thin base board of Styrofoam. Next, we wrap each board in black cloth (Why cloth? Because when artists insert or remove pins, no marks shall remain). To complete each panel, we then take pre-cut wood and secure each piece into place. Once everything is done, we transport the panels to the site and professionally mount everything into place. Finally, we mount art on all the panels and a stunning outdoor gallery display is complete.

Wood Counter Display – A Step by Step Guide

It’s not hard to see the allure of a well-made wood counter display. It can add a touch of sophistication to any space, and more importantly, keep a showcase of merchandise organized. As Artisans of Handyman and Designs, we love to craft accessories that are both sturdy and stylish. So in this post, we are delighted to discuss in brief what exactly goes into making a wood counter display. We’re going to take you through the process step by step, so you can see just what it takes to make one of these beauties yourself.

Hold on to your hats; let’s begin!

----------- Share with friends -----------

Wood Counter Display 3D Sketch

Step #1: Sketch and plan your design

As highlighted in our Custom Wood Counter build, here too, sketching is the first and arguably the most important step in crafting an object in wood. It lets you map out your design, ensuring that every element is accounted for and in the correct position. Sketching also allows you to experiment with different designs until you find one that is both practical and unique. Either a quick pencil sketch on a napkin, or a rough sketch in 3D with a program like 3ds Max or Blender, sketching is essential for any build.

Wood Collection Materials

Step #2: Collect your Materials

After you determine where your wood counter display will sit, and you are done creating a sketch/design for it, it’s time to start gathering materials for your build. Aside from purchasing assorted wood pieces, you’ll also need basic supplies like screws, nails, varnish, paint and adhesive. If you are new to hardware stores like Réno-Dépôt or Home Depot, note, it might take a lot of time to find what you need. Nevertheless, once all materials are acquired, it’s finally time to have some fun! It’s crafting time!

Cut the wood to size

Step #3: Cut the Boards and Pieces to Size

After you’ve gathered your materials and made your measurements, it’s time to start cutting your materials to size. Make sure that you use a sharp saw for this step, as it helps make clean cuts and prevents splintered edges. Once you’ve cut your materials to size, assemble them according to the plan of action you’ve set.

If applying adhesive, use clamps to help hold everything in place. Take your time and be precise, because you don’t want a flimsy display unit. Work on different pieces so that one part can be left to dry while you work on another part. If your particular project is heavy, you might need to use screws or nails, but it’s not mandatory for items like small shelves and compartments.

Step #4: Filler and Sanding

Once everything is assembled, it’s time to look for any cracks or crevasses. Fill all imperfections with a touch of wood putty. When done filling, sand down the entire surface to create a smooth and clean finish. Take your time here, because nobody wants a splinter after they touch your piece of art. So sand everything down until everything is nice and smooth.

Step #5: Apply a Sealant or Finish of Your Choice

Finally, if you prefer a different tint for your finish, now is the time to apply a stain. With most stains, you can use a cloth to apply it to the wood. You can then use another cloth to wipe excess stain away for a stroke-free finish. After you are all done applying stain, and after everything is thoroughly dry, it’s time to seal your work. Depending on the stain used, you can now apply a sealer or varnish. Generally, it’s best to use a stain and sealer from the same brand in order to guarantee a perfect harmony between products. Some sealers require a touch of sanding between coats. If you read the the instructions on the label and diligently follow their advice, a fantastic finish is guaranteed. When done, you now have a waterproofed and perhaps even a scratch-resistant show stopper. Awesome work!

Final Note: A Quick Sum Up

There you have it! A quick step-by-step guide on how to create a wood counter display. With careful planning and a little patience, you too can create your very own professional-looking display. Just remember, take your time and double-check your work. As the famous saying goes – Measure twice, cut once. However, if things go astray and you’d like to put down the measuring tape and hang up the woodwork apron, please feel free to contact us for help, or have a look at Woodwork101 – a great resource and guide for some or all of your future work.

Thanks for reading, and good luck!

Makita 12inch sliding miter Saw

Makita LS1219L 12″ Slide Compound Mitre Saw – Perfect for workshops, homes and garages! Although we do not have this bad boy at the time of this writing, we aim to get one for our upcoming Sci-fi Workshop Studio. There are other brands that also offer compact backspace features, like the RIDGID 12″ R4251, however we believe that miter saw with arms, instead of rails, shake when their blades are fully extended. For absolute precision, it’s best to stick with a railed system. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

Wen 5 gallon shop vac icon

WEN VC4710 10-Amp 5-Gallon Portable HEPA Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum and Blower – Compact and powerful, this tiny Shop Vac is perfect for any job site. Not only is it powerful, but you can also build a dust cyclone system above its compact form for easier and cheaper dust collection and disposal. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

Icon Wood Glue

Carpenter Glue – It’s generally best to use a wood glue instead of construction glue for cabinet projects. It has a very strong bond, and it’s easy to sand to a clean finish before applying paint or varnish. To be safe, just buy a big bottle to begin with, because when you need it, you ReAlLy need a lot of it! Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

Tool Purchases to Avoid

For this project, there are tools that are needed, and then there are tools that should be avoided. The following are a few tools that you should absolutely never purchase!

Icon Mastercraft 10inch sliding miter saw Icon

Mastercraft Sliding Compound Mitre Saw with Laser, 10-in – There is a reason why you find these units always on sale at half price or more. It’s because everyone returns them for a refund. We bought one ourselves because it looked pretty and had a nifty laser guide, but we quickly realized we couldn’t use it. The sliding rail system stutters/jerks when you move the blade back or forth, so precise cuts are impossible. Stay away.

Icon Miter Saw

Compound Mitre Saws – Eons ago, we had a Bosch compound miter saw in our shop. It served us well until we upgraded to a miter saw with a rail. Wow. It’s like using a hand saw instead of a chainsaw to cut a tree. It’s a world of difference! Just get a sliding miter saw as your personal first and skip a newb purchase of a stationary compound miter saw.

Mastercraft Drill Press Icon

Mastercraft Drill Press with LED – Again, we bought this because it looked pretty. After assembling and using it for the first time, we quickly dissembled it, placed it back in the box, and ran back to the store for a full refund. The drill bit wobbles when drilling, making precision holes of any size absolutely impossible. Stay away.

The Journey of Building a Custom Wood Counter Display

A few years back, we got a call from a client who wanted to construct a simple custom wood counter for his Gallery Store. He had some basic requirements like it should be sturdy and last for at least 10 years. Now, the specifications weren’t that hard to meet but the challenge was in how he wanted it to look like – simple and precise. We went through several iterations before we finally nailed the design and made him a simple custom wood store counter which he loved!

Simple things can make all the difference sometimes. How did we end up making our custom wood counter you ask? Read on for some handy hints on how to complete a project like ours.

----------- Share with friends -----------

The Requirements?

  • A durable counter unit with a sunken area for a cash register
  • Nothing too intricate. Keep it simple.
  • Budget materials

Getting the Design Ready & Getting the Supplies

Similar to our sketch of a custom counter display, in order to build a custom wood counter like the one shown here, a sketch is always a must. A quick drawing of ideas always helps to get the ball rolling. We can then carry the best ideas forward and put more thought into how everything should look in a 3D program such as 3dsMax. Once everything is clear and we like the final design, we can present it to the client. In this instance, the client loved our suggested design. So with a seal of approval in our pockets, we were now able to advance to the next level – purchase our materials.

As depicted in our photos, our custom wood counter design includes a sunken cash-register area, a back compartment for a fridge and a main showcase area. Additionally, the counter is complimented with a compact side counter, a tall glass display case from IKEA, and a DVD shelving unit positioned on the back wall.

Adding Details and Finishing the Project Off

Construction-wise, the top board consists of finished wood and plywood secured together to give it extra thickness. Instead of veneer edging that can’t be stained, we apply a roll of non-glued natural Oak edging along the edges with adhesive. After the Oak edging is fully secured into place and trimmed down with a razor, we sand the corners down to a smooth and rounded edge. Stain and then varnish are applied for a solid looking finish. After everything is dry and assembled, the finished counter fits perfectly into its pre-planned position.

A simple finished piece, given just enough love, will always add a ton of character to any shop, home or garden. This was a fun project to build!

Milescraft Pocket Hole Jig Icon

Milescraft 7336 Pocket Jig 200XCJ – To build a custom wood counter of your own, then you are going to need a pocket hole jig. It’s great for placing strong and secure screws on the inside of cabinetry, where they can’t easily be seen. This particular set is conveniently small, so it is easy to carry around the job site. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

DEWALT 20V MAX XR Brushless Impact Driver and Hammer Drill Icon

DEWALT 20V MAX XR Brushless Impact Driver and Hammer Drill (DCK287D2) – This set provides the best of both worlds. You’ll need the driver for large pieces of wood, and then the drill, with its adjustable torque settings, for more delicate work, like securing drywall, assembling IKEA furniture, or building cabinets. The drill can also be set to hammer drill, to quickly drill through cement and brick. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

DEWALT 6-1/2 inch Circular Saw Icon

DEWALT 20V MAX* Circular Saw, 6-1/2-Inch, Cordless Kit (DCS565P1) – A cordless circular saw, for any build, is a must! A 6.5 inch unit has just enough depth for all your needs, plus, it weighs less than standard 7.5 inch saws. A battery and charger is included in this package. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

Tool Purchases to Avoid

For a project like creating a custom wood counter or similar, the following are two types of power tools that you should avoid purchasing altogether:

Corded Drill Icon

Corded Drills – Don’t. Just don’t. Unless it’s for mixing cement, or drilling a 4-6 inch diameter hole through concrete, you will never need a drill with a cord. Drills are needed on roofs, attics, and basements…. and also in many painful positions and places. It’s best if you did not have to worry about a cord.

Corded Circular Saw Icon

Corded Circular Saws – The cord will always get in your way. Avoid plug in circular saws. For a battery powered circular saw like the Dewalt 20V Max shown above, it is best to get a pair of Powerextra 20v 6.0Ah lithium Ion batteries. Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

The following sample photos showcase the construction of custom created gallery panels. First, we construct each panel with a styrofoam core. Styrofoam enables a client to attach art directly onto a board with either pins or small studded nails. Each board is then covered with rough paper. With rough paper as a cover, the removal of a pin or nail barely leave a visible mark. The Poles that we use in this setup, they are all fully adjustable and can accommodate a ceiling height of 8-15 feet. With adjustable poles, lightweight panels, and an attachment method that takes only mere seconds, this is an ideal solution for floor plans that continually change over time.

Once approved, we immediately remove the back wall and shift the bathroom door to a small passageway that makes it less visible to public. We then apply faux brick and faux stone to walls. Next, we raise the floors and paint the entire gallery. Finishing touches are then applied and voila, an attractive gallery that customers love to visit.

Marché Artisans Chalkboard Headings

Here we create chalkboard headings for Marché Artisans, located at Fairmont the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. First, we create each design in Photoshop. Then, once we receive an official go-ahead, we carefully and diligently transfer all designs onto boards with colored chalk. Each design has around three colors max. A minimal colors approach ensures a greater visual clarity when each board is seen from afar.

Apartment Room Renovation

Apartment Room Renovation

In this renovation project, we give a room a more modern and cozy look. First, we remove 2 layers of old vinyl tiles. Once the tiles are out, we cover the floors with an acoustical underlayment which is both sound and liquid proof. Then, we apply an additional layer of thin foam to smoothing out small irregularities, and finally, vinyl wood floors are applied. We then cover the floors, tape the walls, and protect additional items before we finally paint the room. Once painting is complete, we add additional finishing touches to give the room a final and finished look.

Halloween Decor at Second Cup

Halloween Decor at Second Cup

Here, we create Halloween decor for an outdoor terrace at Second Cup du Parc, in the McGill Ghetto community. First, we mount strands of webs everywhere with plastic wrap. Next, we spread the strands along the edges of the terrace. As we work, we staple all intersections together to create a durable, large and fully weather resistant spider web. We then build an extra-large spider on site and place smaller spiders within the terrace covered walls. Lights are finally added and the scene is complete with an eerie and fun feeling for a splendid Halloween at Second Cup.

Faux Cement Counter-top

Faux Cement Counter-top

We cut, mount, and then scratch plywood baseboards here as a base for a faux cement counter-top. Between each coat of cement (5 coats total), we sand the surface to assure a better bond and finish. Once the final coat is dry, we clean the area of dust. We also section the zone off with plastic drapes to prevent dust from entering the area. Finally, we apply 2 coats of epoxy finish and voila, a durable and stunning finish!!

Chalkboard Menu Designs

The following are chalkboard menu designs that we create for Milton B, an urban cafeteria located in the McGill Ghetto community. Similar to other custom projects and designs, we begin by creating a simple design in Photoshop. Once managements reviews the design and they approve it, we then transfer the images over onto their respective boards. We inscribe the designs with colored chalk to create a fashionable design that blends in well with the overall surroundings. To date, customers still compliment the designs.
