How to Save Time, Money and Stress When Assembling Furniture
Many people find reading an instruction booklet to assemble furniture from IKEA or Wayfair both frustrating and time-consuming. The Requirements?
Come by at 4pm to assemble the following furniture items:
- IKEA Queen-sized bed
- Wayfair TV table
- IKEA 3-door wardrobe
- IKEA 4-drawer cabinet
- and a lovely white IKEA desk
Additionally, an old wall shelf needs to be pulled down to make room for a new 3-door cabinet, and the cabinet then needs to be fastened to the wall to secure it into place.
Execution and The Final Result
To accommodate our client’s schedule, we came by at 4pm, on time, on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. We began with the bed. Then the 4-drawer cabinet, then the 3-door wardrobe, … until we finally finished with the TV stand. We followed all instruction booklets to the letter, and improvised when needed. In the end, everything was assembled correctly. There were zero scratches, missing pieces, warped attachments, or driven through screw holes. Additionally, we cleaned up after each assembly, ensuring no mess was ever left behind. When done, our client was very happy with the results and thanked us for our professionalism and hard work.

Our Best Tips for Ikea and Wayfair Furniture Assembly
TIP #1: Always read the entire booklet before you start an assembly.
A common mistake people make is not reading the directions thoroughly before starting an assembly. It’s always a good idea to read ahead so that you can understand how what you do in step #1 can impact later steps in the line. Example, “oh, it must be placed in this fashion, because later, it will be attached to this piece here…”
TIP #2: Read ahead and Identify if you will need help.
By skipping forward a few pages in an instructional manual, you can generally see if you will need a hand or not. If later pages turn more into schematics for assembling a rocket ship, it’s best to contact a professional before any damage is done. Assembling a simple chair is one thing. To assemble a 12 drawer queen sized bed… things get complicated quickly. It’s better to hire a professional for an hour or two than to buy the same item twice.
TIP #3: Start with a drill and finish by hand.
IKEA furniture is fragile. If you would like to speed up your assembly, but don’t want to blow a screw right through both faces of your panels, then you will need a drill with torque control. See below for our recommended power drill.

38-Piece Magnetic Ratcheting Screwdriver Set – For IKEA and similar furniture, it’s always a good idea to tighten everything down by hand. This little set has all the bits needed to complete a furniture assembly project. As a bonus, it has a ratcheting system, so you don’t have to reposition your grip after each twist. A Set of Plastic Spinning Wall Anchor Screws – We always tell clients, “always use” the plastic set. Never the metal set. Why? Because plastic anchors absorb vibrations and never damage the surrounding wall. Whereas metal anchors, vibrations causes their hard surface to slowly, over time, wear out the wall like a saw cuts through wood. Eventually, they simply fall out altogether. As handymen in the field, we can’t count the amount of times we have seen metal anchors fail and fall off the wall. Never once have we seen a loose plastic anchor. Tool Purchases to Avoid
For this project, there are tools that are needed, and then there are tools that should be avoided. The following are a few tools that you should absolutely never purchase!
Self-Drilling Metal Drywall Anchors – When it came time to anchor the cabinet to the wall, we stayed away from these metal anchors. Metal Drywall Anchors are especially bad for other projects like curtain installations. Over time, vibrations cause the anchors to chew up the hole and fall out. It’s best to always stick with plastic anchors for drywall.
