Custom Gallery Panels: What They Are and When to Use Them

Building panels for a Montréal gallery studio is our kind of puzzle—lightweight cores and crisp edges straight off the table saw. We sourced the right pieces—foam core, textured wrap, and height-adjustable poles—from different suppliers, then brought them together like a well-labeled To-Do list (no missing screws, promise). The payoff? Reconfigurable walls you can carry from one spot to another without breaking a sweat—perfect for galleries that love to rearrange.

Project Brief: Size, Mobility, Texture & Budget — at a glance

To design a gallery panel system that looks great, lasts, and adapts easily, we aligned with the client on six essentials:

  • Panel size: 8 × 4 feet – big enough to showcase art, still friendly to doorways and elevators.
  • Mobility: Frequent moves for rotating events – quick to set up, easy to shuffle between shows.
  • Space planning: Extra panels for flexibility – swap layouts in minutes to suit each exhibit.
  • Materials: Lightweight – kinder on staff and timelines, without sacrificing durability.
  • Finish: Textured surface – complements stone and brick walls for a cohesive look.
  • Budget: Keep costs lean – skip premium metal framing and invest where it matters most.

With goals set, we engineered a custom panel system tailored to the gallery’s footprint and visitor flow. For best practices in exhibition care, we referenced the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute.

Custom vs. Prefab Panels — What We Actually Built

Off-the-shelf kits didn’t fit—too heavy, too limiting, and not the right look. So We built a made-to-measure system: warm textured faces, matte hardware that disappears, and 8×4 modules that shift into new layouts in minutes. The budget stayed lean, install was low-impact and ceiling-friendly, and reinforced edges kept everything looking new show after show. If you want a display that works as hard as your programming, custom is the way to go.

Build Method — fast, clean, and gallery-ready

We built this system to travel well and look good doing it. The core structure is 8×4 ft, 1-inch foam—lightweight, durable, and forgiving enough that tiny nail holes don’t linger. Each panel gets a warm textured wrap and reinforced edges, so lines stay crisp from opening night to teardowns.

For support, we repurposed height-adjustable poles (IKEA) to play nicely with ceilings from 8 to 15 feet. The hardware was painted matte black so it visually steps back and let’s the art do the talking. Result: a modular setup that shifts layouts in minutes and keeps pace with a gallery that loves to reinvent the room. Top 5 Reasons to Get Custom Gallery Panels

Custom gallery panels don’t just hold art—they hold the room together. They’re flexible, professional, and designed to evolve as fast as your programming. Here’s why going custom pays off:

  • Instant glow-up: A cohesive look that flatters the art and the photos.
  • Layout agility: Swap configurations between shows faster than a playlist change.
  • Brand fit: Finishes and proportions that speak your language, not “generic gallery.”
  • Better flow: Unified sightlines that allow for better circulation, so visitors feel led, not lost.
  • Future-friendly: Reconfigure, re-skin, and reuse; built to adapt for years to come.

Bottom line: custom panels are a high-impact, reconfigurable backbone for galleries, retail, and events. For inspiration on wayfinding and labels, check out the American Alliance of Museums’ exhibition ideas.

Firecore 360° Laser Level Tool

Firecore 360° Laser Level Tool

Green means go—and with this laser level, it means Go Visible. Unlike those dim red lasers that vanish in sunlight, the green beam cuts through daylight so you can actually see what you’re doing. Plus, the 360° horizontal projection keeps every wall in sync, so whether you’re hanging art or running trim, everything stays perfectly aligned on every wall of a room.

Firecore Niveau Laser 360°

VEVOR 4-Piece Torpedo Level Set

VEVOR 4-Piece, 48/24/16/10 Inch, Box Levels Set

We picked this VEVOR 4-piece level set because it saves us from the “one size fits none” problem. Hanging a shelf? Grab the 10". Checking a long beam? Pull out the 48". With four sizes in one kit to choose from (plus a bag that keeps them from rolling under the van seats), you’re ready for any job that demands things stay square, plumb, and not embarrassing.

Plastic Self Drilling Drywall Anchors

ISPINNER 140pcs Plastic Self Drilling Drywall Anchors

We use these plastic drywall anchors for about 70% of our installs—curtains, shelves, pictures, you name it. Unlike their metal anchor counterparts, they don’t keep chewing into plaster with every vibration, so walls stay solid. Perfect for light to medium weight items, they’re our go-to for everyday jobs.

Tool Purchases to Avoid
Achats d'outils à éviter

Not every tool on the shelf is worth a spot in your precious toolbox. Skip the ones that slow you down, break too soon, or test your sanity more than your skills—the list below highlights a few worth avoiding.

Red Laser Level Tool

Red Laser Level Tool

Red laser levels? Forget it! The second sunlight shows up, they disappear, leaving you squinting and second-guessing instead of measuring. A green beam with a 360° horizontal line is The Real Upgrade—bright in daylight and perfect for making shelves, trim, or artwork line up across an entire room in one-easy-step.

Niveau laser rouge

Metal Self drilling anchors

Metal Self drilling anchors

Metal self-drilling anchors might look tougher, but they’re actually quitters in disguise. Unlike plastic anchors that absorb vibrations, metal ones slowly grind away at the drywall with every little shake. That means your curtain rod will hold—for about a year—before crashing down at the worst possible moment! (fat cats be warned!)

Built for the Art, Loved for the Making

We had a blast shaping this Montréal setup—sketching layouts, test-fitting panels, and tweaking sightlines until the room felt effortless. It’s the satisfying kind of work where the space quietly does exactly what the Art Needs.

End of the day, this wasn’t just about panels—it was about rhythm, light, and a room that plays nice with art. That’s the part we enjoy most.
